A business calendar is a set of choices
A calendar-day range has a straightforward distance, but a business-day range depends on the working calendar. Before counting, establish which weekdays are available, which full dates are excluded and whether the final date belongs in the range. Without those choices, two people can produce different totals without either making an arithmetic error.
For a global project, start with the calendar that actually governs the work. An office, retailer and support operation can have different weekly schedules even in the same city. Do not substitute a familiar Monday-to-Friday pattern when the project uses a different working week.
Build a relevant exclusion list
The business days calculator lets you choose the weekday exclusions and enter the holiday dates. It does not select an official holiday calendar for you. Obtain the applicable dates from the relevant authority and add organisation-specific closures when they affect the schedule.
Enter dates in year-month-day order to reduce ambiguity. For a closure on 25 December 2026, use 2026-12-25. If an observed or substitute holiday is a different date, list that date explicitly when it applies. A holiday falling on a weekday already excluded by your schedule does not need a second deduction.
Choose the boundaries before counting
By default, the tool considers the start date and excludes the end date. A range from Monday to Friday therefore considers Monday through Thursday. Select include end date to consider Friday too. Every considered date must still pass the weekend and holiday checks before it contributes to the business-day total.
This boundary rule matters when dividing a project into adjacent periods. If the first period ends where the next begins, excluding the end avoids counting the shared boundary twice. For an attendance list that should include both the first and last day, an inclusive range may be more appropriate. State the rule alongside the number.
Translate the count into a usable plan
A business-day count is not the same as team capacity. Five eligible dates do not imply that every person is available for five full working days. Account for leave, part-time schedules, partial closures and other commitments separately when estimating hours.
For a team spanning several calendars, calculate the calendars separately or define a shared schedule for the particular activity. Record the weekend settings and holiday list so the count can be reproduced later. If the question concerns a contractual or official deadline, use the definition and counting rules specified for that deadline rather than treating a general planning total as authoritative.
