Keep the hours and threshold in the same period

The hours you enter and the overtime threshold must describe the same period. If you are estimating a week, use that week’s hours and a weekly threshold. If you are modelling a single day, use that day’s hours and a daily threshold. This calculator does not combine daily, weekly or consecutive-day overtime systems.

Regular hours are the hours up to the threshold. Hours above it receive the entered multiplier. With a multiplier of 1.5, an overtime hour is paid at one and a half times the base rate. Use the rate and rules from the arrangement you are checking; there is no universal threshold or multiplier for every country or type of work.

Calculate gross pay before deductions

Regular pay is regular hours multiplied by the hourly rate. Overtime pay is overtime hours multiplied by that rate and the multiplier. Add the two amounts for estimated gross pay. The estimate does not subtract income tax, insurance, pension contributions or other deductions, and it does not add bonuses, tips, allowances or benefits.

Enter hours as a decimal duration. Seven hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, not 7.30. If your records use hours and minutes, convert them first. When working from a weekly time card, verify which recorded hours are eligible for this particular pay calculation instead of assuming every hour has the same treatment.

Use currency labels consistently

The currency selection formats the amounts. It does not convert an hourly rate between currencies or retrieve an exchange rate. If your agreement states a rate in a particular currency, enter the numeric rate and select that same currency.

Treat the output as a transparent arithmetic estimate. Final pay can depend on local rules, employment status, agreements, minimum rates and rounding policies that this tool does not determine. Compare the components with your actual records when investigating a difference on a payslip.

Worked example

A custom overtime estimate

For 45 hours at a rate of 20, with a 40-hour threshold and 1.5 multiplier, regular pay is 40 × 20 = 800. Overtime pay is 5 × 20 × 1.5 = 150. Estimated gross pay is 950 in the selected currency.

Common questions

Does this calculate take-home pay?

No. It estimates gross regular and overtime pay before taxes and other deductions.

Is the overtime setting legally correct for my location?

The settings are supplied by you. Check the rules and terms that apply to the work before using the result for payment.

Does changing currency convert my hourly rate?

No. It changes the display currency only. Enter a rate already expressed in the currency you choose.
